Rocket Surgery

At the end of each school year, we have to clean out our rooms and return our non-attached technology to the school library. However, when the technology in question weighs a good 80-100 pounds, problems arise. Can that one item be kept in the room? Nope, not an option. Is there a custodian who maybe has a cart that could handle it? They're setting up for the graduation ceremony.

So, student helpers. Yay. However, when it's close to the end of the day at that point and I'm called to the office for a meeting, worry sets in. I'm on planning and won't have another class before dismissal. Fortunately I pass a group of boys lugging a similar item to the library for another teacher. I ask them if they'll go to my room and get my item and take it to the library when they're done with the one they have, and they say "sure!"

Thank goodness! It's covered.

After the meeting, I check back in my room, and sure enough, the item is gone. I call down to the library, but there's no answer. This doesn't surprise me, as (a) the librarian has also been helping out with graduation planning, and (b) given her limited time in the library, if she's there, she probably has a mob of people checking things in. So I call the teacher of the boys I talked to and ask if there were any problems. No - he'd been a little concerned about how long they were gone, but now that their story of helping me out is confirmed, he feels better about it.

I try several times that afternoon and then the next day to get the librarian to sign me off, but every time I go by the library she's not there. Eventually I try calling ahead to check, which saves me the walk, but doesn't result in any success. The day after that is our last work day, and the librarian is absent. So I go to one of our assistant principals and turn in a few smaller items that I didn't have trouble carrying by myself, and she signs off on the form we have to have filled out.

A few weeks later, I get a voicemail message. They've noticed that my large item is missing.

*headdesk*

I email back explaining what I did, giving the time frame, thinking that perhaps there was a closet available, or a work room, for the times when the librarian was away and the library was locked up. There's no response, so I let the matter go, though it continues to gnaw at a corner of my mind.

About a month after that, well into summer break, I get an email reply (finally). They re-checked the items that were turned in (the same ones they checked before) and mine isn't among them. They also went and checked my classroom, and the neighboring ones, though why they would have thought they might find it there is beyond me. I am reminded that this was signed out to me and therefore I am financially responsible for it.

*more headdesking*

It's a day or two later before I've mustered up the psychological stamina to head down to the school with my husband. Neither the AP nor the librarian is there, but we do find a custodian who offers to unlock rooms for us so we can look. He takes me by the library first, though of course, it's not there. My next guess is one of the teacher work rooms, as that's where teachers store their materials over the summer while their classrooms are being cleaned. We go first to the one that's closest by - it makes sense to me that if the library was closed, the boys wouldn't want to lug that thing any further than they had to! It doesn't take more than a few seconds to glance around and see that unfortunately, it's not there.

We check the next two work rooms with no more luck than the first, and I'm already thinking I may have to go through and check every single room in the entire school. But as we walk up to the last work room, the door is already open and through the doorway I can see an enormous black box next to the copy machine. It's the right shape and size and when I go over to it my heart is pounding and I check the serial number and it's MINE, ALL MINE!

I mean, don't get me wrong, I'm delighted that things worked out. But it was more than a little frustrating that it had been presented to me as this huge problem; they'd spent a significant amount of time searching and come up with nothing. And then we spent five minutes checking four rooms (ten minutes and five rooms if you count the library) and found the darn thing.

Note to Self

It doesn't matter how cute the outfit looks; wear sneakers after you've slept poorly!

Lord, Lord - I am in such pain. I got a beautiful burgundy linen skirt at Dragon*Con weekend before last, and I wore it to church on Sunday and then I went, hm, Monday is dress-up day... I'll wear it with my cute lil brown heels and my brown sweater.

I don't know exactly what happened, but I woke up tired and sorta-sore, so I didn't put in my contacts or wear any makeup. I did pull my hair half-back, which is a little fancier than I usually do (either a ponytail or a twisty-bun).

Oh. My. God. Becky. I hurt so bad. I'm not going to be able to get anything else done tonight. That means Imonna be behind in grading my research papers. DARNIT.

I really didn't even notice until I got out of the car after the ride home and ... ooo. I mean, all day, nothin'. I had no idea I was hurting myself because, yanno, I DIDN'T HURT.

And I've worn those shoes before - all day - and not ever had problems with them. I must admit, I am more than a little confused. And annoyed. It's like I got sneak-attacked by my own body!

Fortunately since we're going on a field trip tomorrow for the Darn Book, I can wear whatever I want (well, within the bounds of modesty, which I wouldn't WANT to overstep anyway). So sneakers it will be!

And I'll need to take along a big ol' stack of research papers. :P

Oh, well. I guess next Sunday night I'll plan out two dress-up outfits.

Oh, yearbook!

So I'm finalchecking pages and then zipping the files to be uploaded to the plant... and all of a sudden I think, "hm, this is rather a lot of black and white pages all in a row." (In that section of the book, we have a flat of color pages, which means they alternate spreads between color and B&W.)

I check the ladder.

Nope. That spread was supposed to be in color.

SIGH.

Oh, and what's worse? I'm fairly sure that I did tell the student who created the spread that it was supposed to be black and white rather than in color. UGH.

Not that this is an insurmountable problem; all we've really got to do is re-Photoshop the pix and place them in the photo boxes again. I'm setting aside class time for her to do that tomorrow, so she won't get behind with her other work during club period.

Still, it IS incredibly frustrating.

And don't get me started on sales - yikes!

Brief Updates and a Pondering

Things have been slightly crazy. We're actually trying to finish up Issue 2, and I keep reminding myself that I wasn't intending to have this issue go out, since Issue 1 was late; I was going to punt Issue 2 to mid-October (after fall break). But it looks pretty good and I think we can do it.

I put the rest behind the cut because I didn't want to return to the blog with fists full of snark. Frustrations are lurking there - consider yourself warned!

Books

Read several good books lately - Naked Economics and Little Brother and The Poison Apples among them, a week or so ago. I've just recently finished Leaving Fishers and Sometimes the Magic Works, all from the public library. And I re-read Twelve Impossible Things Before Breakfast, from my own collection. There were others, but I don't particularly remember them... Oh, a good bit ago I read A Curse as Dark as Gold, from the school library. That was unexpectedly good.

Frustration mingled with petty vindictiveness

Our brilliant administration had decided that students should not be in charge of counting votes for senior superlatives and took that out of our hands (yey!) and said they'd do it (uh-oh). Predictably, the votes were NOT counted by the day the photographer had been scheduled to come by. Seniors are mad. I am happily letting them know they should talk to the admins.

And finally: Teh Suck.

This past week I had several kerfuffles, but the worst was that Tattletale bounced in at the start of Photo Retake Day and announced that Goth Girl had a razorblade stashed in one of her books and I should check it in class. I managed to thank her without rolling my eyes and told her to go let an appropriate authority figure know. Didn't even SEE Goth Girl that day as I had a sub so that I could stay in the auditorium with the photographer and try to figure out how to get the ninnies who never pay attention to ANYTHING to come by and get their photos made. And only those ninnies - not the ones whose photos we already have and just want to get out of class.

GR.

Anyway, so thought nothing about it until I was called to an AP's office and asked why I didn't report this. *facepalm* Had it not been photo day with several Issues already (we had advertised gym & photo dude set up in auditorium - ended up not being a big deal cuz nobody pays attention ANYWAY, plus we had a bunch of students who'd had their photos taken the first time but there was a camera issue and as a result the images somehow didn't get stored), MAYBE I would've called it in right away, as I got told I should've.

I was really upset about this at the time. I'm still troubled by it. I honestly think I'm a pretty good teacher. And I don't tend to have too much trouble with classroom management. But this concerns me - I'm not a good i-dotter-T-crosser. Never have been. However, it's something that I need to be good at, and I don't know how to get better at it.

Pondering for today: What supplies could you not live without?

I'm pretty frugal when it comes to supplies. Right now I'm annoyed that our start-of-year supply order got messed up and I didn't get the tape I wanted. I have my "backup roll" in the dispenser, but it's not nearly as nice, despite the fact that the backup is Scotch tape and the other is an off-brand. :P

Obviously, as we have a computerized grading program that stores our data on a network, I use my computer and internet connection fairly frequently.

I'm also an email junkie - I'd much rather communicate by email than just about any other way. It provides evidence of what was said, unlike face-to-face or telephone conversations, you have the ability to check and revise before sending, you can keep lots of messages in the same place without worrying about clutter, they're accessible from any computer with internet access, and the search feature lets you find specific messages easily, even when you're like me and you keep darn near EVERYTHING.

I feel awkward if I don't have writing tools with me. I'm not incredibly picky, though I prefer to avoid markers and crayons. ;)

And I'm incredibly stingy with my whiteboard markers. There's another class in my room during my planning period, and I'm sorry, but it ticks me off when my whiteboard markers disappear. I try not to let it bother me, because I realize that I'd be worse about it than any other teacher ever has been to me, but... gah!

I love our Journalism printer - a HP Color Laserjet 2600n. Everything looks so smooth and crisp and clear!

We also use the Canon digital point-and-shoot a lot. There's also a Nikon SLR, but it's going to be a WHILE before my staff is dedicated enough for me to decide it's worth my while to teach them how to use it. I will NOT let them use it for cutesy myspace-style candids. :P

And of course, there's my Regular Three: my keys, my wallet, and my cell phone. These are what I check my pockets for (if I remember) in the morning. Even so, if I realize that I'm not sure where something is, it's NBD. The Hunk and I drive to work together (his school is maaaybe a mile and a half away from mine, so he drops me off) and I can ask to have a janitor open the door to my room. If I don't have my wallet, I can't buy lunch, but missing one meal? again, NBD. And the cell phone - pf. If it's important, they'll leave voicemail. So long as the Hunk has his phone, I can use the school phone to call him. (It works the other way 'round, too.

What about you? What supplies are essential? important? useful?

I don't think I slept particularly well

So after poking around here a bit, I decided I was hungry and would fix a bowl of cereal for myself. With a glass of orange juice.

Went to the cupboard, got a glass and a bowl. Went to the fridge, got the cereal off the top, poured it into the bowl. Closed the cereal, put it back. Opened the fridge, got out the orange juice, poured it over the cereal, watching to make sure I didn't spill. Noticed that something looked different...

Crap.

It's not that bad, actually.
