So I know that one of the things I want to buy with my departmental funds is a subscription to a poetry magazine. Currently, my favorite poets are Billy Colins, Taylor Mali and Mary Oliver. I'm looking for poems that are clear, rather than pretentiously obfuscated, yet still insightful and thought-provoking. Many of my freshmen will enter my class as low-level readers, but they won't want to be babied. (And neither would I want to, anyway.)
Any suggestions?

Taylor Mali ROCKS. MY. WORLD. He's also a really great one do illustrate how different an experience of reading a poem can be from hearing a poem.

I ran across your blog through a link from huffenglish.com. I'm new to the whole blogging thing, so this is the first blog I've ever commented on, but I just had to given the topic - poetry!
I just ran across a journal called Barrow Street (http://barrowstreet.org) that is very accessible. Another great site, if you have a few hours is Dee Rimbaud's Independent Press Guide (http://www.rimbaud.org.uk/0001b.usamag.htm) which lists nearly all the poetry journals with urls that publish in the US.
My high school students also like some of the ideas I used from the book Poemcrazy by Susan G. Wooldridge and Writing Toward Home by Georgia Heard.
