This session built on ideas I'd already recognized - that "can't read" is actually an overarching result that has any of a number of skill-based deficiencies as the cause; that students who don't want to read will often say they can't read, but the effect is pretty much the same; and that you gotta identify individual difficulties before you can get past them.
So, between this and session D, I think I'm going to change my starter from grammar practice (in fairness, I hadn't been doing DOL corrections, but sentence construction) to 10 minutes of independent reading with a reading journal that they use to demonstrate a particular reading strategy/skill each day.
