Graduation that doesn't suck

Confession: I hate, hate, HATE graduation. It's a long, dull recitation of names that only serves to emphasize that more than a third of the students who entered as freshmen are no longer there.

On the other hand, last night was a little different.

There was one (yes, just one, but at least there WAS one) interesting part. One of the seniors - let's call him Billy Bob - will turn 21 in August. That means he's been in high school for at least SIX YEARS.

When his name was called, the entire senior class stood up and cheered like crazy. And as he walked back to his seat, there was a vaguely familiar THUMP! THUMP! and moments later,   fireworks exploded in the sky above the stadium.

Now THAT was a memorable moment.

Wow. At least he stuck with it, you know? A lot of kids would have ditched as soon as it was legal for them to drop out...

I'm so jealous reading the posts of teachers who are done. Our last day with students is June 13, and our last day as teachers is June 17. Oh, well. At least we start the day after Labor Day! BTW--did you get a chance to look at the newspapers yet?
