I am going to go soak in the tub - yes, this time we still have water!

Question for the bright ones out there: why do we call the figures 'triangle' and 'quadrilateral' rather than vice versa? You know, trilateral and quadrangle. Don't they essentially mean the same thing? And if not, why is there a change? Is there an additional difference between triangles and quadrilaterals beyond the number of sides/angles?
