Snark

Sometimes I think I must be a masochist for keeping Joanne Jacobs on my blogroll. Posts like this one invariably attract teacher-hating trolls.

Since my comment is a fairly inflammatory response to another commenter, there's a possibility it will be removed, and so I'm cross-posting it here:

Allen, you're so welcome. You know, I'm always delighted to have my words distorted by teacher-haters, so really, I should be thanking you!

Thank you for ignoring the fact that at no point in my comment do I say that 'teachers have no responsibility to demonstrate professional skills' (emphasis mine).

I'm sure you will also ignore any attempt I make to clarify that my problem is not with accountability overall, but with teachers being judged (a) on the actions of others, NOT on their own actions, and (b) based on limited data from (c) standardized testing that (d) compares students to each other rather than to their own previous levels of achievement.

Ooo, I just can't WAIT to see how you purposefully misinterpret this one!
Seriously, people - WTF? What IS it with the anti-teacher hysteria these days? Get a life. Go do something productive.

I'm about to! ^.^

First I had to read a bit about Joanne Jacobs - Shocker - another person who has never been in the classroom telling those who work in the classroom what to do...
Usually these types like to add "in the real world" or "in the business world", however, I seem to recall that "the business world" f'd up and their public callout and "real world" result was a $700 BILLION dollar bailout.
I think 2009 Teacher of the Year, Anthony Mullen, said it best:

In fairness, Joanne collects links and posts them with her responses to them. I've always thought she presented a good mix of stuff. But some of her commenters are off the wall.

LOVED your response to an asinine comment! I don't understand the teacher bashing either, and sometimes I can't control myself when commenting on other comments. My husband tells me not to bother, but really, who else is going to defend us?

I would not take these teacher bashing comments too seriously. We are publishing on the internet which is a jungle rife with predators who are just happy to cling their fangs in the necks of those people who had to control their impulsive behaviour in the past. It only shows that we as educators not always manage to straighten everyone out, which is sad enough.

See, Joep, that's just it - we're publishing on the internet. That's why it bugs me so much to let a comment like that go unchallenged. I'm not the only one being subjected to it, and it's just awful to think that others might see all the noise and believe that most people share that idiotic opinion. That's why I'm with Knighton.

Besides. Sometimes it just feels good to use my fangs... >;)
