Vigilance

So I keep hearing how we're supposed to write when our students write, and choice-read when our students read. But I haven't been able to do it. I mean, it's not like I spend the time twiddling my thumbs, or even doing something "productive" but requiring focus, like entering grades into the computer or working on unit plans. Generally after I've taken attendance and checked email to see if I need to send any of my students somewhere else, I go on patrol. First I head up to the board. Is the starter still up there clearly? (Sometimes someone will have done some "editing," since it's just dry-erase.) Ditto the date. Have I cleared off all the notes and/or brainstorming from last period? The thing is, all of that is nothing more than an excuse. The real reason I go up there is to remind students that yes, I am here, and no, I am not napping. Therefore, YOU need to be doing what you're supposed to be doing. Why is this so complicated?

• Stay focused on your work.
• Have you finished your starter? No? Go ahead and continue.
• You have? May I see it? Well, please finish it, then.
• I know you're finished, but (a) the person you're talking to isn't, and (b) when you're done, what are you supposed to be doing? Mm-hm. Where is your SSR book?

*sigh...*
