Okay, overall, this story is already horrific, but one quote caught me so off guard that I flagged it for a post later:
"Schools must teach that we may not like one another, but we must respect one another." - Kevin Jennings, executive director of the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education NetworkOkay, scusi? Yes, schools need to reinforce that idea, but good NIGHT! Folks, kids need to be coming TO SCHOOL with that already ingrained firmly in their li'l noggins.
I hope - I really, really hope that Mr. Jennings meant that schools must foster and encourage respect, because I just don't think it's possible to teach it from scratch - or, in some sad cases, from less than scratch - at school.

The point I think that's made by that quote, though, is a valid one. For the most part, students don't come to school with these values and ideas. They're NOT being parented well at home, and I'm horrified that it's MY generation of parents that's so terribly dropping the proverbial ball here.
My question becomes; how do we teach PARENTS to do their jobs, so that teachers can focus on doing theirs?
